Air Conditioner Troubleshooting 101

Air Conditioner Troubleshooting 101

Even though it is still winter, it is not too early to start thinking about whether your air conditioner will be ready the moment warmer weather moves into St. Albert. Here are a few troubleshooting tips recommended by Consumer Reports to determine whether you need an air conditioner repair. Contact us for more information.

Your AC is Not Cooling

There are so many reasons why an air conditioner may not be delivering as much cool air then it normally does. These reasons and fixes can range from a simple fix that you can do yourself to having a professional provide an air conditioner repair.

Filter is Restricting Airflow. An air filter that is completely covered in dust, pet hair, and other debris is going to restrict airflow to your furnace. It also decreases efficiency and reduces your air conditioner’s ability to cool the air in your home. If you have noticed a decline in your system’s cooling abilities, check your air filter before calling for a repair because often all you need to do is replace your filter.

Check your thermostat. Often what seems like a cooling problem is actually an issue with your system’s thermostat. The first thing to check is whether the temperature is set correctly. If it is not, simply set the correct temperature. Another common issue is that the batteries may have died in your thermostat.

Dirty or Blocked Registers. For your air conditioner to work correctly, it relies on proper ventilation. Each register or air vent should be vacuumed regularly to remove dust and hair. Check to see that there are no items stuck in any vents. Your registers should not be covered by rugs or furniture.

Compressor is surrounded by grass and weeds. Check to see if the airflow for your compressor cabinet is not being blocked. Make sure to clear grass and weeds away from your unit to allow a clear path for now.

The Importance of HVAC Maintenance

Your home’s cooling system should be inspected and tuned-up every year. This valuable service will help prevent cooling issues throughout the cooling season. During your service, your technician will make manufacturer-recommended adjustments and make needed adjustments to assure continued airflow for proper operation of your system.

A maintenance service does much more than protecting your system from cooling issues. It lessens the possibility of needing an air conditioner repair during the hottest times of the year. Other benefits that HVAC maintenance service include:

  • Inspection of air conditioner for any damage from the winter
  • Measurement of refrigerant level to determine if more should be added
  • Inspection of all electrical connections for scorching, burning, or looseness
  • Replacement of air filters and replacement when needed
  • Recommendations for any air conditioner repairs that your system may need
